Here at Smil, we take your oral health and your overall health very seriously. As part of your routine examination, our dentists provide meticulous screening for mouth cancer for your health and peace of mind.
In oral cancer, abnormal cell division leads to lumps, bumps, and discolouration of otherwise healthy tissues.
Almost everyone is familiar with cancers like breast and lung cancer. This type of atypical cell can, however, appear anywhere on the body. In order to ensure the health and safety of all of our patients, Smïl provides regular screenings.
Early detection is vital, which is why it’s important to attend routine dental appointments as often as your dentist recommends.
Oral cancer can affect anyone but there is an increased likelihood of developing it if you are exposed to the many risk factors. As well as tobacco products and alcohol consumption, HPV (human papillomavirus) is a leading cause. Smoking and heavy drinking are the main risk factors. HPV is linked to some cases, particularly cancers at the back of the throat. Sunlight exposure is also a factor in the development of cancerous cells on the lips.
These signs are usually caused by something else, but if any lasts longer than three weeks, book a check with your dentist or GP.
There are many other symptoms of mouth cancer. If something doesn’t feel right, please contact our practice right away for an oral cancer check with one of our dentists.
You will receive a mouth cancer screening as a part of a routine checkup with your dentist. The actual process is straightforward. During your examination, we will look at your oral health history to establish any risk factors. Your dentist will feel under your chin for swelling and inspect your mouth for signs of abnormality. We’ll watch for lumps, ulcers, and white patches that can’t be easily removed.
There is no national screening programme for mouth cancer in the UK, so your routine check-up is an important way to catch early signs.
If you happen to notice any changes in your mouth or ulcers that do not heal, please do not hesitate to get in touch right away. Call our Chatham practice now on 01634 756 536. One of our dentists will be in touch to schedule a mouth cancer screening.
