The different types of Dental Implants

Implant-retained dentures – can be an excellent choice for those familiar with dentures but who would like better stability. Implants are attached to a denture with implant-retained dentures – just like a pop button – which holds the dentures in place as you go about your daily activities. Dentures with reduced suction and retention benefit the most from these dental implants.

As with all of our treatments, you will have a comprehensive consultation to assess suitability and be given all of the dental implant procedure options available. The implant treatment process

First, you’ll be invited to our Chatham practice for an initial consultation. Our experienced dentists will take the time to discuss your needs and how we can help you achieve your smile goals.

If dental implants are recommended for you, you’ll be invited back to our warm and welcoming practice where they will be fitted. It can take around 16 weeks for your titanium screw to heal. Your body will need to grow gum around the implant so that your replacement tooth has a strong foundation to attach to.

The implant procedure itself can vary depending on how many dental implants are being fitted. Our dentists will monitor your healing through a follow-up appointment, which will determine when you are called back to our practice to have your crown fitted.

The aftercare

After your dental implant treatment, you may experience some mild discomfort once the local anaesthesia begins to wear off. This pain should fade after a couple of days but in the meantime, you can take over-the-counter medication to relieve any symptoms. Some of our patients have reported some swelling around the area and even develop bruises but these will disappear around a week after your treatment.

Keep your mouth as clean as possible – rinse your mouth with a mixture of salt and warm water to keep it clean and encourage healing.
Do not vape or smoke
Avoid hot and cold drinks
Rinse your mouth after food

After your implants have healed, continue to maintain excellent oral health and hygiene to ensure the longevity of your implants.

The difference between dental crowns and dental implants?

A crown, when it is used alone, is attached to a partially natural tooth. With dental implant treatments, the titanium screw is placed into the jaw where the tooth once was. A crown is usually placed on top of the dental implant to restore the function of a tooth.

How can dentures improve implants?

Dentures are attached to the dental implants in your jawbone, providing you with much more stability.

I joined Smil one year ago in the hopes of creating my Invisalign journey. I had been to various dentist surgeries prior to Smil and was disappointed with the upselling tactics used; one surgery stating I needed a full set of veneers to achieve my dream smile. Having a dentist that you can trust to give solid clinical reasoning around a treatment plan means everything. The best treatment for the patient rather than how much money can they make out of you. My husband and I have finally made the move we should have made sooner and registered back with Dr Neil Underhill at Smil. Neil is a fantastic friendly dentist. I’ve been seeing him for over 25 years now and he’s always been really accommodating to my needs. My fitted veneers lasted years beyond what was expected and so I trusted Neil to do them again for me for my upcoming trip to the USA; to which he fitted me into his busy schedule on short notice. I even travelled half way across the country to have them fitted professionally because I know he will always do a great job. I also had some composite bonding work and whitening done to which has really improved my smile greatly. Smil is a very accommodating place and all the staff and dental assistants there are very kind and helpful. I recently joined Smil following a recommendation from a friend after struggling to register with a NHS dentist. I’m not one for the dentist and have always been super anxious when visiting but these guys have been amazing, after just a few visits I already feel more comfortable and confident about the whole thing. The building is super clean and the staff are fantastic, but I must give a special mention to Neil and Rosie, both visits Rosie has been great in reassuring me as I’ve been so nervous which in return has helped me stay calm, Neil has been fantastic and explains everything that will be happening and has provided me with great advice also, I have now signed up to the monthly plan which shows just how happy I am at this dentist! Would recommend to everyone ☺️

Just come back from a visit to Smil. I have to say this is the best dentist I have ever had. All the staff are friendly & helpful. The premises are clean & comfy. Neil, the dentist is great, friendly & efficient. Went out of his way to fit a crown for me. The hygienist , also great. Very thorough and gentle ( not always the way with hygienists.) Unfortunately I can only give 5 stars. Would give more if I could.

After months of following Smil's progress from the start through social media, today I finally got to visit them. Whilst the practice had looked great in photos, in real life it was breath taking! The spotless modern decor and relaxing ambiance were noticeable as I walked in. Charlotte at reception was very friendly and showed me around. I was impressed to see all the state-of-the-art technology, two intra oral scanners, the CBCT machine, and the newest toy of all.. the Blanc One whitening system. I have not even come across this before, very up to date and modern.
